Starting in July l998, the Mississippi will offer the ability to title boats and engines. This is not a mandatory requirement; For boat owners, however, a more complete file will be obtained. Original requests, duplicates or transfers are subject to a ten-dollar fee. Persons under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a person aged 21 and over on board the boat to operate the boat. Since July 1, 1997, anyone born after June 30, 1980 must complete a boating safety course in order to operate a boat. Only the following Internet boat courses are approved and accepted by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. The operator of a boat or personal watercraft who chooses to take an Internet course must have proof of successful completion of one of these courses in order to operate a boat or personal watercraft in Mississippi public waters. Other States cannot accept these courses. Most insurance companies reward these courses by offering discounts on insurance premiums after graduation. Duplicate boater training cards are only available to those who have taken the course through the MDWFP. The fee for duplicate cards is $3.00. The state course, taught by MDWFP officers and volunteers (6 hours of face-to-face study), is accepted throughout the country.
